Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah pengaruh signifikan aplikasi Wattpad
meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas X di SMAN
2 Malingping secara signifikan. Menggunakan desain kelompok pre-test
dan post-test, metodologi yang digunakan adalah quasi eksperimen, dan
metodologi penelitian adalah kuantitatif. Populasi penelitian ini
berjumlah 94 siswa, dan sampelnya berjumlah 60 siswa. Dalam
menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan tes prestasi dengan komputasi
statistik SPSS 25 untuk menganalisis uji hipotesis. Peneliti memperoleh
hasil thitung (0,285) dan signifikansi dua sisi = 0,465 < α 0,05. Dari data
tersebut dapat diartikan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan
antara kedua kelompok dalam memperoleh skor, karena hasilnya nilai
signifikan lebih besar dari 0,05 yang berarti Ha diterima. Oleh karena itu,
peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa penerapan Wattpad mempunyai peran
yang baik terhadap keterampilan pemahaman membaca teks laporan
siswa. Selain itu, aplikasi Wattpad selain efektif dalam pembelajaran
membaca juga dapat digunakan sebagai media membaca buku online
karena aplikasi Wattpad mempunyai ruang kosong untuk komunikasi
antara guru dengan siswa maupun antara siswa dengan penggunaan guru
lainnya. kolom komentar yang disediakan.

Application Wattpad
The aim of this research is the significant effect of the Wattpad
application significantly improves the reading comprehension abilities of
class X students at SMAN 2 Malingping. Using a pre-test and post-test
group design, the methodology used is quasi-experimental, and the
research methodology is quantitative. The population of this research
was 94 students, and the sample was 60 students. In analyzing the data,
researcher used achievement tests with SPSS 25 statistical computing to
analyze hypothesis tests. Researcher obtained tcount results (0.285) and
two-sided significance = 0.465 < α 0.05. From this data it can be
interpreted that there is a significant difference between the two groups
in obtaining scores, because the result is a significant value grether than
0.05, which means Ha is accepted. Therefore, the researcher concluded
that the application of Wattpad had a good role in students' reading
comprehension skills of report texts. Apart from that, the Wattpad
application, apart from being effective in learning to read, can also be
used as a medium for reading online books because the Wattpad
application has free space for communication between teachers and
students as well as between students and other teachers use the
comments column provided.

1. Pendahuluan
In Indonesia, English is the primary foreign language taught in schools. The phrase "foreign
language" in education refers to a language that is instructed rather than used for everyday
communication. Foreign languages are generally part of the school curriculum. English is a
required subject in Indonesian schools, from elementary to university levels. Even with years of
study, many students find learning English challenging. Therefore, students need learning tools
that are interactive, engaging, and easy to grasp. Among the skills that students need to master in
learning English are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Despite focusing on these four
skills, students often struggle with understanding the language. Reading is an everyday activity
that can help students expand their knowledge. This, in turn, enhances their ability to derive
meaning and purpose from what they read. As stated by Ferdiansyah et al. (2023:208), "Reading
is one of the four essential English skills, involving the examination of written material and
interpreting the meaning of the words." By reading we can gain new knowledge and
information, through this process we can reduce uncertainty in understanding the writing and
meaning of the reading we have read.
Identification of the problem, Given the issues outlined in the background, the research
questions are as follows learners' insufficient word knowledge, lacked of interested in reading in
students, students found English difficult to read and understand. Many students are still
reluctant to read for various reasons, especially finding English difficult to read and understand.
This affects their interest in reading English or other subjects. To improve student achievement
in the learning process, particularly in reading activities where understanding the teacher-
provided text is essential, it is necessary to address poor learning outcomes. Enhancing these
outcomes is supported by the surrounding environment and students' reading habits, as they
often spend time socializing with friends both in and out of school. This has led to a daily
decline in students' interest in reading. The above statement addresses the issue of dwindling
interest in reading in Indonesia. Many parents and children spend their time watching TV, using
electronic devices, and socializing with friends. This affects their interest and ability in reading,
leading to feelings of laziness and boredom when it comes to reading. Hence, there is a need for
factors that can inspire students to read and boost their enthusiasm. The role of teachers and the
learning environment is essential in this process. Many students abandon studying English even
before lessons begin due to inadequate vocabulary.
Reading comprehension is a vital part of English language proficiency, enabling students to
interpret and understand text meanings. It is particularly important for students to master this
skill when reading books or texts provided by teachers. Reading comprehension involves
analyzing the content of materials to understand their meaning and purpose. This skill is
essential for students to accurately comprehend and interpret the texts they encounter.
1. Wattpad Application
Wattpad is an application for reading stories from various genres, ranging from children,
teenagers, adults, and the elderly. This application can be categorized as an application that

is quite often used as a medium for reading. According to Gonzaga, et.al in Khasanah
(2020:8), "Wattpad is an ERSITAS ISLAN platform that offers a space for writers to
publish their work and for readers to access these writings. Moreover, it facilitates free
interaction between writers and readers." Designed for reading and writing enthusiasts,
Wattpad has gained widespread popularity, boasting 15 million users globally, over 400
million stories, and an average reading time of 30 minutes per session. Mawardi (2018: 77-
82) states that "Wattpad is a platform where social media users can explore various types of
content, such as short stories, novels, and poetry." The platform has expanded quickly and is
now recognized as a form of electronic literature. Wattpad's largest user base is in the US,
with significant followings in the UK and Canada. Moreover, it has also grown in Asia,
including Indonesia.
2. Report Text
A report text is created from research or observations that describe a situation, condition, or
both natural and artificial phenomena in the environment. As stated by Dirgeyasa (2016:70),
"Report text describes how aspects of our environment are depicted." These texts typically
cover natural events, human-made occurrences, and social issues, providing detailed and
factual information to improve the reader’s comprehension. Sunarti (2015:61) also noted
that "A report text (informational report) is used to categorize, describe, or present
information about a particular subject. According to this statement, a report text delivers
information on various general subjects, such as science, natural events, the environment,
and technology. It aims to identify or describe details about a topic to produce information,
expand knowledge, and provide a wider understanding for the reader.
2. Metode
This research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design with two
variables in this method. By collecting numerical data to test the impact of the program using
SPSS 25. The experimental class and the control class are the two class groupings sampled in
this research. According to White & Sabarwal (2014:2) explain that "quasi-experimental
methods, which include forming a comparison group, are commonly used when random
assignment of individuals or groups to treatment and control conditions is not feasible." Before
carrying out treatment, first a pre-test is carried out to determine students' abilities and scores.
The post-test was carried out to assess abilities and scores after being given treatment. Pre-test
and post-test help determine whether there is a difference or not. The research was conducted
from January to July, the population in this study included three classes, namely X1 with 31
students (sixteen girls and fifteen boys), X2 with 32 students (seventeen girls and fifteen
boys), and women and 18 men).

The sample is part of the research population. Authors used random sampling techniques
to take samples from the entire population. Based on data collection using random sampling
techniques, autjor used class X2 as the experimental class and X3 as the control class.

Based on the table above, the author took two classes to measure this research. The
authors took two classes because the authors u 1sed the Wattpad application for the
experimental class and the Cabaca Application for the control class.
3. Hasil dan Pembahasan
The pre-test and post-test totaled 30 students in both classes and the following table
explains the results of the pre-test and post-test scores for students in the experimental class
and control class, as follows:

In the pre-test and post-test in both classes the total number of students was 63 people.
However, in implementing the pre-test and post-test as a test of students' reading
comprehension, not all students participated in the implementation. There were 30 students
involved in the pre-test and post-test in the experimental class and 30 students in the control
class. In the pre-test, the control class which included 30 students, had a highest score is 70, a
lowest score of 45, and a cumulative total of 1,179. In contrast, the Experimental class, with
30 students as well, recorded a highest score of 75, a lowest score of 45, and a total of 1,875.
During the post-test, the Control class again comprised 30 students, achieving a highest score
of 80, a lowest score of 60, and a total of 2,125. The experimental class, which had the same
number of students, recorded a highest score of 80, a lowest score of 45, and a total score of
2,135.
In this research, data analysis uses t-test analysis. Author use the normality test and
homogeneity test before calculating the T test. The purpose of these two analyzes is as a
prerequisite for research analysis. Based on calculations from the SPSS 25 program, the data is
normally distributed and homogeneous, therefore to determine the hypothesis (T test) this
research uses parametric statistics, and the output of the T test with the SPSS 25 program is as
follows.

The data results show that the p-values of 0.212, 0.218, 0.415, and 0.421 are greater than
0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the data for each class is normally distributed,
indicating that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted. Fot a homogeneous test is carried out to

determine whether the population variances used in the research are the same or not, in order
to fulfill sufficient requirements for comparison.

The Levene test results from SPSS 25 show a significance value of 0.289, exceeding 0.05,
which suggests that the two classes do not differ significantly. This implies that the variances
are comparable, indicating homogeneity of the data.

The Levene test results show a value of 0.289, which exceeds 0.05, indicating that the
variances between the two groups are not significantly different. As a result, the t-value for
"Equal variances assumed" is -0.89 with 58 degrees of freedom, and the two-tailed
significance value is 0.465. Because this significance value is greater than 0.05, the null
hypothesis is rejected, suggesting that the Wattpad application significantly effect students'

reading comprehension of report texts. This research is a type of quantitative research that
connects cause and effect, with two variables, namely the Wattpad application as a (X)
variable and reading comprehension as a (Y) variable. The purpose of this research is to test
the effect of Wattpad towards students' reading comprehension in report text. The researcher
aimed to find out whether the treatment and pre-test and post-test were given for 3 weeks
because the permission given by the school was limited. This research was conducted at
SMAN 2 Malingping, this research involved 63 students from two classes, namely Class X2
with 32 students and Class X3 with 31 students. These classes were designated as control and
experimental classes using random sampling techniques, both classes received different
interventions. The control class uses the Cabaca application, while the experimental class uses
the Wattpad application. Both classes completed the treatment as well as pre-tests and post-
tests during the research.
4. Kesimpulan
Based on the results of research conducted at SMAN 2 Malingping Lebak-Banten for the
2023/2024 academic year. The researcher obtained the results of data analysis from the
research that there was a significant effect of wattpad application towards students' reading
comprehension in report text. This could be seen in the results of the hypothesis test that
tcount = 0,465 and the significance value (p-value) = 0.465 < 0.05. Then the alternative
hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This means that there was
a significant difference in the scores of the two groups, namely between the control class and
the experimental class. Therefore, the researcher concluded that learning using the Wattpad
application has a good and significant effect towards students' reading comprehension the
tenth grade of SMAN 2 Malingping Lebak-Banten in academic year 2023/2024. In light of the
reserach findings, the researcher suggests the following recommendations:
1. For English Teacher
a. The application of the Wattpad application as a learning medium needs to be carried out
by the teacher. Because students are given the freedom in the learning process to
conclude their opinions, students' interest in reading arises to learn seriously
b. The Wattpad tool should be tailored to different subjects to assess its effectiveness as a
teaching resource across a range of topics.
c. For teachers who use the Wattpad application, it is hoped that there will be an increase in
the new learning atmosphere every time they teach.
2. For Student;s
a. Students are anticipated to build increased confidence in sharing their ideas.
b. Students are expected to engage more actively in their learning and take greater
responsibility for the assignments given by the teacher.
c. Utilizing the Wattpad application enables students to enhance their reading
comprehension through regular reading, even without focusing on in-depth analysi.
